Tom & Femke: now Mr & Mrs. Wurdinger!

On Saturday, November 4, it so happened that Ivan was speaking to Tom via Skype. Tom casually mentioned that "he was going to get married". When Ivan asked "when?" he got the incredible reply "in two hours from now". When it was clear this was no joke but a fact, the machinery got in action. Ivan mobilized all his friends and even Tom's brother and worked out a high-tech scheme. The result was that exactly two hours later we were witnessing Tom and Femke's wedding on a large video screen in the local watering hole, the famous "BOK's Place". This was a truly simultaneous dual-nation wedding-party between Boston and Enkhuizen and even the Officer of the Peace, who conducted the ceremony, took time to address the crowd in the Netherlands over this live video connection. All in all a clear triumph of technical skills, improvisation and true friendship. Congratulations to Tom and Femke. Well done !

Ivan back from Washington

Time to go and time to return. Mid October 2006 Ivan returned from Washington DC and his family and friends arranged such a home-coming party that it felt as if Ivan had never been away. In reality of course, Ivan spent more than five months at the American Enterprise Institute and during that period he tasted the political machinery and he met many 'political celebrities'. In addition Ivan has learned much about strategy and tactics and - last but not least - he has developed a new high caliber international network of fine individuals. All in all no doubt a very useful period. As a compliment to his efforts at the AEI, Ivan has the potential to return to the AEI as a researcher, but presently it is Ivan's intention to start a career in the field of business, either in the USA or in Europe. Before his departure from Washington, Ivan obtained a verbal agreement for a very special job in Washington, but unfortunately the gentleman with whom Ivan made the arrangement [the company's CEO] now seems scheduled to leave the organization in a very unexpected way and on very short notice. In the light of this uncertainty Ivan has redirected his career efforts but basically anything can still happen in this connection. No doubt an exiting new period for Ivan. .

Robert and Gina's Wedding

Jazz Festival Enkhuizen - 2006

On May 19-21 [2006] Enkhuizen has its 33rd Jazz Festival and its last, at least for the time being. We have no pictures of the festival. Our house was filled with special friends and family and 'our medical team', consisting of Dr. Bert, the self-appointed Chef, and Chief-Nurse Diana, the Deputy-Chef, spontaneously organized and produced a superb dinner party. Despite the fact that nobody was formally invited [as usual], the Chef and his clever Deputy were fully prepared for the ever-growing group of dinner guests. Letter from Buenos Aires

For those of you who can read the Dutch language a letter from Stefanie to her brother Ivan about her days in Argentina

Even een update van je zus, ik heb je gister al iets gestuurd, maar bedacht me opeens dat jij een heel verhaal gestuurd had en ik bijna niets, dus bij deze even een verhaaltje van mijn laatste dagen. Vanochtend eerst gedoucht na 20 uur in een bus naar Buenos aires te hebben gezeten. Erg lang, en had ook nog eens 2 uur vertraging omdat de boeren in Brazilie aan het staken waren. Net dus aangekomen bij Mirre, fijn om haar weer te zien, wel een heel raar idee dat zij net in Nederland geweest is. Ik heb Joyce, vriendin van Marit met wie ik 3 dagen gereist heb, op de bus naar Rio gezet, samen met een nieuwe vriend, Edwin, die kwamen we tegen in het hostel in Foz do iguazu. Een aardige jongen, 25, woont nog bij zijn ouders en is laborant. Compleet onschuldig dus! Joyce vond het wel fijn om niet alleen in Rio aan te komen, dus die hebben lekker 24 uur samen in de bus gezeten. Ze zien daar een andere vriendin van Marit en haar zusje. Tot zover dus dat. Marit en B zijn alweer in Nederland; die heb ik hier niet meer gezien. Ik vind het echt heel leuk om te zien hoe dat allemaal werkt, iedereen trekt zijn eigen plan en als dat overeenkomt, dan zien we elkaar, erg leuk. Ben bang dat ik het reisvirus een beetje te pakken heb. Hebben er 27 uur over gedaan om vanuit Salta naar Iguazu te komen, dus ik kan wel iets hebben! Alhoewel het op een gegeven moment wel genoeg was, we stopten echt in elk boerengehucht, en omdat dat natuurlijk niet genoeg was en het best ver lopen was van de ene kant van het dorp naar de andere kant, stopten we er op vrijwel elke hoek van de straat! Joyce en ik werden echt moedeloos. Iedere keer als we net op gang waren, stopten we alweer! Maar goed, verder niet interessant. Eenmaal aangekomen hebben we een taxi genomen naar de andere kant omdat iedereen ons vertelde dat met de bus te gevaarlijk zou zijn voor 2 meisjes alleen. Gevaarlijk land dat Brazilie! Er schijnt ook een oorlog aan de gang te zijn tussen de maffia en de poltie, die vorig weekend aan 52 mensen het leven heeft gekost in Sao Paulo alleen al. Een taxi dus maar, wellicht overdreven, maar zo sterk ben ik nu ook weer niet. Hostel was echt fantastisch, een kamer voor ons 2en, met een hele mooie tuin, met allemaal mooie bloemen en bomen, super! De watervallen waren ook echt fantastisch, we zijn natuurlijk in zo´n toeristenval getrapt. Safari en boottrip voor 70 real. Safari was echt niets aan, beetje door de `jungle` in zo´n nepjeep, het Amsterdamse Bos is spannender, maar de boottrip was erg leuk. We zijn 3 keer onder een waterval doorgevaren! Klinkt niet echt spannend, maar het was echt zo leuk!! Zeiknat geworden natuurlijk, maar gelukkig konden we in de zon opdrogen. Verder heb ik net van vader het hele Ayaan Hirsi `Ali` verhaal te horen gekregen, erg vreemd verhaal!! Ga ik later dieper op in, maar Mirre staat nu te wachten, er moet uitgegaan worden. De enige dag hier dat je niet om 3uur s´nachts pas naar een club kunt, maar dus al om 21u, betere tijd voor mij.

Hier in Washington gaat alles geweldig, Maandag dus aangekomen, beetje door de stad geslenterd, heel indrukwekkend allemaal, wat een mooie en levendige stad. Gisteren de hele dag thuis gezeten gekluisterd aan de laptop kijkend naar het debat in de kamer. Boeiend allemaal, binnenkort zal ik door dezelfde gangen lopen als Ayaan, dat is best apart. 's Avonds gejogd, was lachen; waren jongens aan het voetballen in een park hier even verderop; ik stond te kijken en werd vervolgens uitgenodigd om mee te doen, daar stond je broertje ineens tussen de Salvadorianen voetbal te spelen! hahaha!... Ik had nog een mooie voorzet en een bijna goal, samen met wat "hoog-houd" trucjes heb ik voldoende indruk gemaakt om weer mee te mogen doen denk ik! Als ik tijd heb ga ik morgen weer, ze waren er vanavond ook, maar het regende en ik was laat thuis. Vandaag begonnen, eerst een introductie gehad, over de drie vloeren van het AEI gelopen, iedereen een handje geschud en uiteindelijk op mijn plek beland. Ik zit naast een italiaanse jongen, echt een bijzonder relaxte gast; veel met hem gesproken en we zitten behoorlijk op 1 lijn, echt cool. Hij jogt ook, woont niet te ver weg, dus we hebben afgesproken binnenkort een rondje te doen. Samen naar een conferentie geweest over de Irak oorlog, een paar luitenanten, een Sgt en twee sprekers (een voormalig adviseur van Reagan) en een van de AEI. Heel boeiend, ongelofelijk wat een sprekers hier komen. Ik zit overigens 15 stappen verwijderd van Lynn Cheney d'r kantoor, Amerika's "Second lady". Wat een wereld he? Ik ben echt heel enthousiast. Zou eigenlijk vandaag gaan honkballen voor de AEI, maar was al pratend met Attilio (die Italiaan dus) te laat... Ik heb hem ge-enthousiasmeerd om volgende week mee te doen, dat leek 'm wel een goed idee. Morgen spreek ik Ledeen, ben benieuwd; de verhalen die ik hoor zijn vol respect en positief; aardige kerel, beetje verstrooid soms, verwacht dat je alles weet, super goed in zijn werk en rookt veel sigaren.

Ivan - first week in the USA - May 2006

En route to Washington Ivan enjoyed the hospitality of Tom and Femke [Femke recently joined Tom] in rainy Boston.

On May 15th Ivan arrived at the place that will be his home in Washington for the next 5-6 months ....

Ivan's next base: Washington

Earlier (on March 9, 2006 in "Congratulations Ivan") it was reported that Ivan, following his graduation, was working on an invitation for a special research assignment in the U.S.A. Recently Ivan received confirmation of his appointment, from May until December (2006), at the renowned American Enterprise Institute, Washington, D.C. AEI (www.aei.org) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to scholarly research in areas of economic, social and political, and foreign and defense studies. According to his formal Letter of Assignment, Ivan will be "performing independent, academic research alongside one of AEI’s scholars, Dr. Michael Ledeen. Dr. Ledeen’s wide-ranging expertise covers many areas of foreign policy, including the Middle East, Europe, U.S.-China relations, terrorism, and intelligence". Ivan is expected to concentrate on various issues concerning the Middle East.

Congratulations to (now Dr.] Tom

An earlier posting ["Good luck TOM, Nov. 23, 2005] already mentioned Tom and his departure for Harvard Medical in Boston. In the mean time Tom has been been back twice and both times for special occasions worth mentioning. Tom's first retun was early February [2006]. Main purpose of this first visit was to defend his thesis ["Tumor-selective coronaviruses as potential anti-cancer agents."] and to receive the honors of a doctorate from the University of Utrecht. . Tom received high accolades, not only for his superb academic work, but also for the presentation in the form of his book. As a sideline Ivan shared some of the praise, because Ivan had produced the book at Tom's request. Following the formal part of the ceremony, [now Dr.] Tom celebrated the special occasion in true tradition: with family and many friends, lots of booze, nicotine, and until the small hours.
